Terms of use

Last updated: 2026-09-26

These terms govern your kilma account and your use of kil.ma. They are the agreement between you and the operator of this site: Stefan Dissmer, trading as KILMA Lingua, C/ Llacuna 162-164, 08018 Barcelona, Spain, NIE X4958335H, email dissmer@gmail.com. The imprint page carries the full provider information.

1. What these terms cover, and what they do not

kilma has three separate agreements, and this is the first of them. These terms cover your account and everything you can do without paying: learning, the guest mode, your profile, the emails we send you. Buying a vocabulary pack is governed by our terms of sale. An individual lesson with a teacher is governed by the lesson terms you accept when you book. Where a purchase or a lesson is concerned, those texts come first; for everything else, this one applies.

You can also use kilma without an account. The guest mode is covered by these terms too, with one difference: there is no account to keep, so nothing here about passwords, deletion or email applies to it.

2. Who may open an account

You must be at least 14 years old to open an account. That is the age Spanish law sets for consenting to the processing of your own data. Below that age you are welcome to learn in the guest mode, which needs no account and asks nothing of you. If you are between 14 and 17, you may take lessons only with the agreement and under the supervision of a parent or guardian.

We ask for your year of birth once, we ask it neutrally, and we take your answer at face value. If an account turns out to belong to someone below the age limit, we close it and delete what it held.

3. Your account

  • One account belongs to one person. Do not share it, and do not let someone else use yours.
  • Keep your password to yourself. If you think someone else has it, change it and tell us.
  • Give us an email address you actually read. It is how we reach you, and it is how you get back in if you forget your password.
  • If you sign in with Google, we never receive your Google password. Ending that connection at Google ends your way into kilma; write to us and we will set a password for you instead.

4. How you may use kilma

Use kilma to learn Darija and to teach it. Beyond that, please do not:

  • copy the vocabulary corpus, the audio or the illustrations out of kilma, in bulk or by machine, for use elsewhere;
  • try to reach parts of the service that are not yours — other people's accounts, other people's lessons, the editor, the administration;
  • put anything into kilma that is unlawful, that infringes someone else's rights, or that is meant to harm or harass another person;
  • disturb the service, whether by automated requests, by security testing you have not agreed with us, or by anything else that costs the rest of us the service.

If you break this section, we may suspend or close your account. Where the breach is minor and can be repaired, we will say so first.

5. Content — ours and yours

The vocabulary corpus, the example sentences, the audio, the illustrations, the exercises and the design of kilma belong to us or to the people we licensed them from. Your account gives you the right to use them for your own learning, for as long as your account exists. It gives you no right to redistribute them.

What you produce stays yours: your homework answers, your voice recordings, the notes you take, what you write on a classroom whiteboard. You give us the permission we need to run the service with it — to store it, to show it to your own teacher, and to play it back to you. Nothing more. We do not use your recordings or your writing for advertising, and we do not put them in front of anyone who is not part of your lesson. The privacy policy says where each of these things is kept and for how long.

The open-source libraries kilma is built with have their own licences, which are listed on the licences page.

6. The service, as it is

kilma is offered as it stands and as it is available. We work on it continuously, which means features change, appear and occasionally disappear. We do not promise that the service will be free of interruption or free of fault, and we do not promise that a particular feature will still be there next year. Where a change removes something you paid for, that is a matter for the terms of sale, not for this section.

7. Emails from us

Some emails come with the service and cannot be switched off, because without them the service does not work: the sign-in link, a password reset you asked for, the receipt for a purchase, and the reminder before a lesson you booked.

Beyond those, we send a learning newsletter to accounts that have gone quiet. It exists to bring people back, so if you have been active in the last two weeks you do not receive it at all, and the longer an account stays silent the less often it goes out. Under Spanish law we may send it to you because you are our customer and it is about the service you signed up for; every one of these emails carries an unsubscribe link, and one click is enough. The lesson reminder and the newsletter are switched off separately — unsubscribing from the newsletter does not stop us telling you when your lesson begins.

8. Ending it

You can close your account at any time and without giving a reason. The delete function in your profile does it immediately: the account, your learning progress, your homework and your recordings go with it. What we must keep for legal reasons — the records of a purchase, for six years — is listed in the privacy policy.

We may close your account if you break section 4, if we are required to by law, or if we stop offering the service. Except where a serious breach makes it impossible, we will tell you first and give you the chance to take your data with you.

9. Liability

We are liable for damage we cause by intent or by gross negligence, and for damage to life, body or health, without limit. For ordinary negligence we are liable only where we breach an obligation that the purpose of this agreement depends on, and then only up to the damage that was foreseeable when the agreement was made. Nothing in these terms limits the rights Spanish consumer law gives you; where a clause here and that law disagree, the law wins.

10. Changes to these terms

We may amend these terms. If a change matters to you, we announce it on the site and by email before it takes effect, and the date at the top tells you which version you are reading. If you do not accept a change, you may close your account, which is what refusing amounts to.

11. Law and where to complain

Spanish law applies. If you are a consumer, this does not take away the protection of the mandatory rules of the country you live in, and you may bring a claim before the courts where you live. If something goes wrong, write to dissmer@gmail.com first — it is faster. If we cannot agree, the imprint page explains the official complaint route in Catalonia.
